The Blog of Seth W. James

The Reviews are in for “The Fall,” Book 4 in “The Cain Series,” and the Verdict is: Hardboiled, Shocking, and Gritty!

The reviews are now in for The Fall, book 4 in The Cain Series, and each of them has remarked on the investigative tone that this novel embraces.  Let’s take a look!

Here are the links and a few favorite lines from each of the reviews.

First up is the review from Booklife by Publisher’s Weekly.  Link: https://booklife.com/projectid/cf0b5060-b72a-11f0-9c7c-547275647911

A few excerpts from the review:

  • “[T]he tale is powered by politics, class divisions, and profiteering . . . [a] tour of a fascinating and persuasively detailed possible future in tune with contemporary concerns.”
  • “James again deftly weaves hard-edged action and nerve-jangling suspense amid all the shoe-leather sleuthing.”
  • “James intertwines a vivid world of acidified oceans, surveillance AI, massive infrastructure projects, and even moon bases with a sweeping plot of political and corporate corruption uncovered by driven and audacious protagonists.”

A positive and satisfying review (and another editor’s pick from BL), the reviewer’s use of words like “gumshoe” and “sleuthing” give the sense of a hardboiled detective story set in a future world.  I can live with that—as a lifelong reader of hardboiled detective fiction, I can certainly live with that—but furthermore, the review provoked a comparison for me, too, between hardboiled and cyberpunk fiction; though quite different in style, the two subgenres do possess certain similarities in their goals, so I was happy to see the comparison raised.

Our next review is from Kirkus.  Link: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/seth-w-james/the-fall-the-cain-series/

And here are a few excerpts from the review:

  • “Over the course of the novel, James does an excellent job of showing what life is like when power players choose not to play by the rules.”
  • “[A] shocking twist late in the book is certain to generate excitement for the next book in the series.”
  • “An action-packed continuation of a series that blends noir and cyberpunk elements.”

Quite a different tone and format from Kirkus, this time around.  It isn’t a bad review, of course, but I have heard some rumblings from other writers about the use of so-called AI in editorial reviews (for the record, there is no such thing as AI; it remains a matter of science fiction; what is being marketed as AI is in no way intelligent and is really only a plagiarism tool).  I hope the rumors are unfounded, as I have always enjoyed the reviews from Kirkus.  If things do work out that way, though, I will likely stop requesting reviews from them.  Oh well.

And our last editorial review is from Readers’ Favorite.  Link: https://readersfavorite.com/book-review/the-fall/4

A few excerpts from the review:

  • “Seth W. James’ The Fall is a fantastic science fiction novel with an amazing slew of calculated and decisive operations through Francesca and Cain.”
  • “The tech is unique and lends itself to the grittiness of the space, from specialized firearms to an augmented-reality device.”
  • “The story moves at a spitfire pace, and with more than one operation underway simultaneously, the sequencing moving everything forward is managed with the skill of a seasoned author.”

As always, it is a unique pleasure to receive a review from Readers’ Favorite because the reviewer is from an actual reader, rather than a professional reviewer, someone who reviews for the love of reading.  What it may lack in polish (and this one isn’t bad at all, either), it makes up for in authenticity.  A satisfying and evocative review, all around.

That’s it for now.  As a brief series update, I’ll say that book 5 is well underway and on track to publish late next spring or early summer.  Readers should also look for a surprise announcement in February or March, 2026!  Until then, happy reading!
